How time flies when you're having fun! For MBA1s, the arrival of Destination Johnson goers demonstrates how much difference a year makes; it wasn't long ago that we were the bright-eyed, eager beavers of a prospective entering class. Members of the Class of 2000 are amazed at how quickly the last two years have gone by and can't believe that this is the end of the line.
Its easy to remember arriving on campus for a long weekend last year, being overwhelmed with information and friendly Cornellians, and wondering how it is that people seem to be in such great spirits around the Johnson School. The answer is easy...student involvement and ownership!
The Student Faculty Committee develops a strong sense for the amount of hard work that all students contribute to make the Johnson School a great place. For the benefit of Destination Johnson attendees and current students who are still mystified at the fact that we voluntarily meet at 7:30 am, let me give you the quick and dirty version of what it is that we do.
We openly meet on a weekly basis with Dean Swieringa and other members of the administration and faculty to proactively address student concerns and act to enhance the daily life of students. We facilitate action groups and sub-committees that work on issues ranging from career placement to hosting special events to developing the curriculum, just to name a few. We also handle a few administrative functions on behalf of the student body. In general, we act as a catch-all for any issues or activities that aren't clearly related to other student organizations.
Over the past semester, the Committee led many initiatives that are generating a lot of excitement for the upcoming year:
- Former SFC representative Dave Nientimp and others led a successful campaign and won the bid for Cornell to host next year's Graduate Business Conference.
- Sean Alexander and Connie Kim worked with Career Services Office Director John Nozell to build a strong student relationship that will directly benefit next year's domestic and international students as they search for full-time and summer employment.
