Several recent and coming events highlight our commitment to enhancing the roles of technology and entrepreneurship in the Johnson School:

· Our European Alumni Symposium in Brussels on March 24 focused on the Internet economy and sweeping changes in technology. Several of us (including 10 students) were among the more than 150 attending. Speakers explored business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) segments of e-commerce, with examples from De Financieel-Economische Tijd—a Flemish newspaper, DHL Europe and Africa, Ready.be—an online supermarket, and many others. Technological, economic, and social issues explored in the context of e-commerce included Internet security, cognitive and social issues in the design and use of interactive technologies, and speech activated and translation technologies. My personal favorite was a location-based device that can inform you about special pricing at a nearby store on something you typically buy if purchased in the next hour. The Symposium was fabulous and highly interactive—most of us ran out of business cards by mid afternoon.
· On March 28, the Johnson School hosted the taping of CEO Exchange, a PBS series, in which CNN Senior Analyst Jeff Greenfield interviewed Dr. William Haseltine, Founder and CEO of Human Genome Sciences, and Dr. David Huber, Founder and CEO of Corvis Corporation about the future of science and business. I was pleased by the enthusiastic attendance and great questions from our side and we were all impressed by the competence and passion for science and technology from these prominent CEOs. The interactions in the atrium over a fine spread continued late into the evening. They said terrific things about us. The program will air some time in late May.
· Cornell sponsored an alumni event, “Net Gains: IT, IPOs, and the Internet,” in Menlo Park, California on March 29 that featured a keynote address by Mary Meeker (MBA ’86) about Internet trends. Many of our alumni in the venture capital and entrepreneurial communities populated the podium and the audience. The event was beamed live into Sage Hall. If you missed it, it is available through the Johnson School Intranet.
