Recently, I’ve come across some useful websites that I think readers of Cornell Business will enjoy. Summer is approaching and you will soon be in a restrictive firewall work environment instead of the Internet free-for-all in Sage. But don’t worry! There are plenty of ways around these so-called firewalls and other ways to protect your precious privacy.

Pop3now.com. Pop3now is a free service that allows you to access your Cornell email account while at work, encrypted at 128 bit. In other words, it is a great system to rant and rave about your boss/company to your friends in a safe and secure fashion. Or, feel free to write steamy letters to your special someone in total privacy.

ZoneAlarm.com. This website gives you access to Zone Alarm, a free software firewall solution which works reasonably well. It comes in handy at the workplace if you have reason to believe your boss is snooping around your personal computer. Trust no one!

PhysTechSoft.com. This software company wrote the program StrongDisk that allows you to create an encrypted virtual hard disk on your computer. Well worth the $80.00 price tag if you plan on working on a business plan or updating your resume while on company time. The software offers numerous unbreakable encryption algorithms that will give you near total freedom on the job. If you get busted, just conveniently forget the password.

Attrition.org/mirror/attrition/. Interested in doing a little Hackitrage? That is, interested in doing an arbitrage where you short stocks right after someone hacks a major Internet corporation? Attrition.org is the place where hackers report their successes and is closely watched by CNN. If you notice a major player on the list, then be among the first to short them, wait a few minutes for the story to break, then watch the stock tank.

david.weekly.org/code/napster-proxy.php3. Sadly, many of you will find out that once you start working, you won’t be able to access Napster because your company blocks it. Well, one way around the block is to visit this webpage which will teach you how to use a something called a SOCKS5 proxy to download as many tunes as your heart desires.

In addition, I would like to share with you some less useful, but fun and entertaining websites that I’ve recently found:

stations.mp3s.com/stations/44/the_worst_of_the_worst_ver.html. Pure comedy! This digital radio station highlights the worst music posted on mp3.com. All the songs are painfully funny, especially my favorite: “Taco taco taco.”

MessyGourmet.com. The Messy Gourmet angle is not only do they give you recipes, but also instructions on how to get the stains out. It is well written and witty.

Autowraps.com. This company has one of the more interesting business plans I’ve come across. Basically, Autowraps.com pays you $400/month to cover your car in advertisement stickers. Maybe you’ll luck out and get a cool sponsor like Yahoo! Or, maybe you won’t be so lucky and will end up with Autowraps.com.
