SFC UPDATE: Two Weekends, Two Perspectives

Brian Thomas '01

Issue date: 5/3/00 Section: Viewpoints
Two weekends, two back-to-back events, two completely different perspectives on life in Business School. I'm talking about Destination Johnson followed the next weekend by the Graduate Business Conference at UCLA.

Of course the former event consists of dazed recently admitted students asking questions about the curriculum and apartment complexes. Many were still at the point of asking about School A versus School B versus the Johnson School. You know, it seems like not so long ago that we were asking those very same questions. Quite honestly since Destination Johnson '99, many of us haven't really put a lot of thought towards School A versus School B. The questions just didn't seem relevant anymore.

The case was reopened last weekend at UCLA. Student leaders from top programs congregated to share their respective schools' "Current Best Practices" (in our best former-life-as-a-consultant and B-School lingo). Between the two events, the Johnson School GBC attendees couldn't be happier to call Ithaca home. We feel great about our decision to hang out at Cornell for a few years and are completely comfortable about spending an entire weekend trying to convince others to do so as well.

From our GBC experience, it was interesting to look at School A versus School B from the perspective of actually having a year of an MBA education under our belts. Actually, the questions we asked each other made a lot more sense than they did at Destination Johnson. Perspectives on student culture and administrative responsiveness were a lot more observable and meaningful to us. So, let us tell you about a few of the things that we learned about other schools as well as our own.

First, let us say in our best politically correct opinion that there are a lot of great schools out there and we met a ton of fantastic people from all of them. However, there is no doubt that there are a few unique characteristics about the Johnson School that make it a special place of which we should all be proud. For starters, while our bagels may not be of Manhattan deli quality, they certainly beat those of Southern California (or as Tiffany Tamplin would say "rolls with holes")!
