The class of 2002 was officially welcomed to The Johnson School beginning Monday, August 14. Yes, that’s right – Monday. For those of you unfamiliar or too familiar with Orientation, the week used to begin with the Dean’s welcome on Sunday evening. Over the past year, a group of students worked with the faculty and staff to revamp and improve Orientation. We added new sessions, condensed others and provided feedback to the faculty and staff to better meet the needs of our students. I personally had an opportunity to sit in on some of the new sessions and was impressed with the new format.

I was particularly impressed with “Introduction to Managing Inclusion.” So what does inclusion mean? Some may be thinking here comes that diversity stuff, since most of us have been to those “diversity training” seminars and classes. Well, I am here to tell you this is not your father’s diversity training. This was a broad approach to capitalizing on all the assets of an organization, not because they are different, but because great benefit is derived from fully engaging all resources. If any member of an organization is not in the house, then resources are being squandered.

“The Mission of all effective people management must be to get all team members, at every level, from full range of backgrounds, cultures, and orientations, into positions where they can continuously learn – where they work on projects and assignments that stimulate development of useful knowledge and skills.”

The expression that symbolizes including others is “Being in the House.” The House is the metaphor for including everyone in your organization in the process of learning, sharing and growing.

I found the session energizing. I challenge all students, faculty and staff to invite people into “Our House.”
