Play golf and get goodies all for free, and make valuable career contacts in the process? And all you have to do is show up? What’s going on here?
The 2000 Cornell MBA Golf Invitational. That’s what’s going on! The Invitational is geared toward helping Johnson School students meet key recruiting personnel in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. As of press time, the 14th staging of this event will include 10 companies with over 40 recruiters in attendance. The event will be held on Friday, September 22nd and Saturday, September 23rd at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course on Warren Road within the Cornell University campus.
The Invitational has 3 distinct events, the first of which is Networking Golf. Johnson School students play golf with recruiters either Friday morning or Saturday afternoon in a non-competitive event. This is fun golf! You do not need to be a serious golfer to enjoy the day and benefits of spending around 4 hours with representatives of companies that recruit Cornell MBAs. Green fees, food and beverages are taken care of by our sponsors but carts and range balls are extra. Last year, over 150 students took advantage of this great opportunity.
The second distinct event is Competitive Golf. Johnson School students may compete on one of 2 teams against 5 other MBA programs in a 2-day, stroke format event. Golfers are welcome to qualify by submitting their signed scorecards to Chris Callieri ’01 (cfc22) after playing 2 rounds at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. The deadline for submission of scorecards is September 17th.
Participants in Networking and Competitive Golf are invited to attend a sumptuous Brunch on Saturday at the home of Mr. Richard Marin that is located beside the golf course. Mr. Marin is an involved alum of the Johnson School who very generously opens his doors to student golfers and volunteers during the event every year.
Lastly, the centerpiece of the Invitational is the Recruiting Fair at Sage Hall’s Dyson Atrium beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday night. All sponsoring companies will have displays in the Atrium and representatives on hand to mix with students over cocktails and good food. Over 300 students attended this portion of the event last year.
Capping the Invitational is the Cocktails and Awards Ceremony to be held at the Moakley House on the golf course on Saturday evening. The champion school team will be crowned and special prizes for the longest drive and closest to the pin will be given out.
If you want to get involved in running this important event, such as being a company host or assisting with student registration, contact Tiffany Loughren (tgl2) for more details. Students have both volunteered and golfed with companies in past, and thereby doubled their networking opportunities. Whatever kind of participation you choose, see you on the links!
