Saturday, September 23rd definitely proved to be a day that tested both our prioritization and time management skills. There were many activities to choose from such as golfing with a corporate recruiter, attending an LSP course, and for the first-year students, preparing for the looming Monday morning accounting quiz. It was also the start of Homecoming Weekend, so the option to attend the traditional tailgating experience and be part of the "Schoellkopf Sellout" at the Big Red football game seemed quite attractive as well.

Despite all of the activities competing for our attention, many students managed to spare some time to enjoy the plentiful and tasty food provided by the pre-football game festivities. And for those who stayed for the football game, there was an additional treat. Cornell defeated Yale in the final minutes of the fourth quarter by a score of 24-23 in a thrilling home opener.

The JGSM Homecoming experience began with a first-class tailgating event. Students and their families mingled with JGSM alumni and staff (including Dean Swieringa and John Nozell) while sampling from spicy chili, sandwiches, chips, beer, and cider. The JGSM tent was in a great location adjacent to the stadium within earshot of the practicing band and one of Cornell's a capella groups, Cayuga's Waiters. And just as planned, the passing rain showers were not cause for panic as the tent covering allowed the tailgating to continue without interruption.

Overall, students were impressed with the JGSM festivities. Kim Jones ('02) enjoyed the tailgating event saying it was a "great set-up in a prime location". She added, "I really enjoyed mingling with current students, alumni, and friends. I thought the spread was great, and it was great to see so many Johnson students out for the tailgate and the game even though we are all so busy."

Many students followed up the tailgating by attending the much-anticipated football game against Yale. And this was not your typical Cornell football game. It was the first home game of the season. It was a match-up against the defending Ivy League Champion. (Much to the surprise of returning Cornell alumni like myself, Cornell is expected to be Yale's top competitor this year for the Ivy League Title since the Big Red squad finished 2nd last season to the Yale Bulldogs.) And finally, it was rumored to be a sellout game. What more could we ask for on a drizzly Saturday afternoon in Ithaca?
