As I closed the door to the cab and then walked up to the Intercontinental Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, I realized that I had made it. No, not in the Frank Sinatra "New York, New York" sense. Rather, I made it to the symposium without any problems. I was one of the more adventurous people who had decided to drive down to the city the night before. It only took 3½ hours and that included finding my hotel and parking. The day of the symposium, I walked out of my hotel flagged down a taxi in about 2 minutes and made it across town in about 15 minutes. So what?! Well, I felt I had accomplished something; especially since I have lived in small towns all my life and it was my first time to one of the largest cities in the world.
Cornell's Johnson School students gathered on September 15th at the Intercontinental Hotel in New York City for the school's annual Consulting Symposium. The symposium is organized every year by the Consulting Club with the help of Johnson staff in Corporate Relations. Venkat Rao, the Consulting Club's V.P. of Special Events and the lead organizer of this years symposium, said they had a very successful turnout. The 189 Johnson students that attended the event exceeded last years attendance. In fact, it was only expected that 150 - 175 would attend this year.
The symposium benefits both the companies interested in hiring Johnson MBA students and Johnson School students interested in consulting as a career. The students also benefit by getting a head start on networking with some of the recruiters who will be interviewing at the Johnson School. Some of the companies that attended have a long standing relation with the Johnson School. William Huling, with Johnson School's Corporate Relations office stated that his office generally helps with the organization of sponsorships. Each consulting firm helps to sponsor the event with there being varying degrees of sponsorship. The consulting companies that attended were Andersen Consulting, Sapient, AT Kearney, PRTM, Arthur D. Little, McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, Deloitte Consulting, American Express, Emerald Solutions, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young.
