The 2000 Cornell MBA Golf Invitational has finally come and gone, and what a weekend it was! In addition to the tournament itself, the weekend had the Homecoming football game against the Yale Bulldogs (which Cornell won by a hair), the Mexican Independence Party, the keg party across from the Chapter House, the International and Minority brunch, not to mention seveal other parties meant to blow off all sorts of pent up steam and energy from hitting whatever books you needed to go through just to keep your head above water.
The Invitational surely did its part to make it a full weekend. About 60 recruiters descended on Ithaca to get the golf event up and running at full steam, despite the chilly Friday morning temperature. The weather forecast did not look promising, but the sun eventually shone mid-day to reward those who braved the morning winds.
To the credit of the school, Pete Loncto '01 said "the recruiters we played with commented on how unique and well-planned the event was. It really distinguishes the Johnson School." We're glad it appeared that the event was well-planned, because it was certainly managed chaos as the tee times were being finalized days before the event. It wasn't the easiest task to match up recruiters and companies with 150 students with varied career goals and functional interests. Some combinations didn't pan out but all students got matched up with recruiters in the end. Still, most groups teed off Friday morning within 30 minutes of scheduled tee times, which was an accomplishment in itself. In addition, almost everyone loaded up on sleeves of golf balls, tees, and the now widely distributed but also currently unavailable golf shirt emblazoned with the tournament logo. Unique to the tournament this year was our provision of running targets dressed in a myriad of colors (hot pink was by far the most popular) throughout the course that were oblivious to golf balls flying in all directions.
The sun didn't stay for Saturday, though. Showers began to fall during the brunch at Rich Marin's house next to the course and it probably deterred some folks from enjoying the informal atmosphere and the filling food just before the shotgun afternoon start. Nevertheless, crowds of eager golfers swarmed the registration desk at the golf course minutes before the 1:30 tee-off to get their stuff, their bearings, and to meet their afternoon golf partners.
