Being hooked up to developments in the fusion music scene, I have been asked to introduce it to b-schoolers, where I have seen some hints of familiarity… Is it alternative, techno, and ambient, drum-n-bass, psychedelic? In fact it is all and so it is none. I call it “clever clutter,” as it combines best practice sounds and different cultural beats, not always striving for harmonious integration, but unimaginable innovations.
For those of you who follow the music scene, you might be familiar with the types of Bill Laswell, Transglobal Underground, Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, Muslimgauze, Loop Guru, Cheb Mami and others. These take you through different experiential social, economic and political journeys. Whether it be the Asian Underground, the Middle Eastern riots, Eastern European bleakness, or highlighting tales of migration and experiences of violence lower South, fusion relays life experiences of artists caught up in developed and developing countries’ social circumstances.
The fusion music industry is growing incredibly fast through networking and diversification challenges, where artists from different parts are connecting and innovating in nodal points including London, Paris and Miami. Talvin Singh works with Bjork and Natacha Atlas to give you India, Iceland and Egypt. Consumers are want to move towards places like swish music lounges, such as my favorite music joint, Le Buddha Bar. in Paris. These have become prime sites to appreciate fusion tracks. Layering on this is the idea of fusion cuisines which I think is stretching fusion a bit too far.
What do I recommend to get you working at a faster and creative pace?
