I am very pleased that three corporate partners have awarded important grants to the Johnson School in recent weeks:
Corning Inc.-a $1 million grant to enable us to develop a total immersion curriculum in e-business and other components of an electronic business program.
Intel Corporation-a $200,000 grant to create an e-business database management library to help us weave data management technology into a wide variety of e-business related courses.
Citigroup Inc.-a $160,000 grant to develop the Citigroup Women and Minorities Alumni Speaker Series and to support Destination Johnson and the Johnson Means Business initiatives.
These grants result from a major commitment to strengthen our corporate partnerships. In 1998 I realigned the school’s admissions, career services, and alumni programs into a new corporate relations group to focus every area of the school on our corporate customers. We assembled a talented team to build broader and deeper corporate relationships. Our faculty continuously re-tooled the curriculum to integrate theory and practice.
The Corning and Intel grants relate specifically to our newest initiatives in e-business. In spring 2000, the Johnson School launched an e-business intensive, based on our successful immersion curriculum in manufacturing, marketing, financial management, and investment banking, integrating theory and practice. Next spring, the e-business intensive will expand to a true immersion, with a greater focus on technology and strategy.
The Corning Inc. grant will enable us to develop an e-business immersion of the highest caliber and enrich other components of an extensive electronic business program. Corning is the worldwide leader in fiber optics and photonics, and is moving to extend its position in e-commerce with our collaboration. The e-business immersion will integrate our leading-edge applied research with Corning’s unique expertise in developing and commercializing today’s advanced technologies. We will work with Corning to help students and executives evaluate the broader e-business landscape. We will introduce them to real-world applications of e-business from Corning and other leading companies. By analyzing how strategies evolve in the fast-changing e-business marketplace across a range of industries, they will gain immeasurable insight into how to harness the tremendous potential of e-business to realize key organizational objectives.
