The 2000-2001 school year marks a number of firsts for entrepreneurs at Cornell. We began the fall semester with the creation of the Big Red Venture Fund. The Fund has since reviewed tens of business plans and grown its seed capital ten-fold. The Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital Club (EVC Club) then built on this momentum with the creation of the Entrepreneur Society. Through a series of social and networking events, members of the multiple entrepreneur clubs across campus have started to form into a single, cross-disciplinary network. The latest event, the first ever Entrepreneurship Symposium, aims to give every Cornellian a glimpse into the world of start-up ventures.
The purpose of the symposium is to put Cornell's students and faculty in the same room with industry practitioners to discuss the most relevant topics in the start-up venture industry: the state of the market for initial public offerings (IPOs) in the wake of the bottom falling out of the Nasdaq; successfully growing a business idea into a publicly traded company; and the future of the startup community in the New New Economy.
To get the industry perspective, our team of student organizers chose speakers from a range of startup-related professions. Symposium speakers include successful entrepreneurs, young Cornellians running their first start-up company, venture capitalists, intellectual property lawyers, and business incubation specialists. In addition, keynote speakers Dr. Teo Dagi and Howard Lee will share their respective visions of the future with us. Dr. Dagi will outline the ideal market structure for the start-up industry given current conditions. Howard Lee will tell us how the Internet has only begun to impact our lives. Finally, corporate sponsors will conduct morning workshops on a number of topics (please refer to www.evcclub.com for details.)
