Having participated in a number of carnivals in Latin America and Spain, I know a good party when I see one. Undoubtedly the Tuck MBA Winter Carnival weekend is up there with the best of them. On Friday, Feb 23rd, 12 Johnson ski racers, 4 fans, and one very enthusiastic professor (Sanjeev), made the trek up to Dartmouth for a ski race and a boat race (aka: test of a team’s ability to chug ice cold beer). There, we joined several hundred students from 15 MBA programs for the 16th Annual weekend activities.
The Carnival began with a kick-off party on Friday night, which included dancing and great entertainment from the London Business School band. Despite Johnson’s strong showing, LBS had us beat with over 28 kilt-wearing skiers, “chuggers”, and rock stars, all of whom crossed the Atlantic for the two-day event.
The ski race began Saturday morning with a dual slalom course, on which each school sent down two teams comprised of four men and two women. (Tuck, of course entered about 10 teams and hundreds of alumni). Second-year captain Will Richmond put in a star performance for Johnson, finishing 8th overall out 168 men. First-year Melanie Herald and second-year Susie Welgos also pulled their weight for the women, finishing 12th and 18th respectively out of 90 female racers. Tim Sallade, a first-year ringer placed in the top 10 for his first run and 23rd overall after getting a 7 second penalty for clipping a gate. Ladislov Lettosky, Ethan Frank, and Eddie Gilmartin each posted top 25 finishes in the first run followed by a series of dramatic events during the second run. Ladislov, remembering his days as an aerialist for the Czech Republic national team, had an athletic finish on one ski. Ethan Frank, the hero of the day, skied so fast during his first run that he injured his knee upon coming through the finish line. Rather than turning into a pumkin, he became Eddie Gilmartin for the second run. Apparently the drama was too much for the Tuck race timers, who are still computing their final results.
