I am a firm believer that too many intrinsically enjoyable activities are either illegal, immoral or fattening. However, there are a few exceptions to the rule, and massage happens to be one of them. Between lugging heavy backpacks up hills and through snow, spending hours hunched over computer screens, worrying about exams, jobs, and cars sliding off icy roads; business school students are one stressed-out population. This makes all of us ideal candidates for massage.
Ithaca is a hotbed of massage talent, with much of it due to the nearby Finger Lakes School of Massage. Many of the school’s graduates remain in the area and set up practices in Ithaca. Below is a small sample of Ithaca’s many massage therapists and what they offer.
Earthshine Massage Therapy – 329 S. Geneva Street, open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, tel. 275-0871. Owner Joy Webber is a registered nurse and a licensed massage therapist. Her tranquil office is soothing in itself. Your first session includes a consultation to ensure you receive the exact type of massage that you are looking for. Joy specializes in Swedish, Trigger Point, and Connective Tissue Massage. She often combines one or more of these techniques to customize your massage. Heated towels and a lavender scented eye bag are unexpected special touches. Joy charges on a sliding scale ($45-$65 for an hour) depending on what clients can afford.
Body Works – Courtside Fitness Club at 402 N. Cayuga Street, 277-2593. Massages are available at both locations, but if you really want to be pampered, Body Works will come to you for a small additional fee. All of Body Works therapists are graduates of the Finger Lakes School of Massage. They specialize in Connective Tissue, Swedish, Relaxation, Sports Injuries, Energy Palpitation and Shiatsu. Cost is based on a sliding scale ($55-$70 for an hour; house calls are always $75). An additional bonus: aromatherapy can be added to any massage for no charge.
