Dean Swieringa has been nominated for the Frozen Globe award for his outstanding performance in the newly released (to the JGSM televisions anyway) cinematic masterpiece “A Dean’s Space is His Castle.” In the midst of a worse than dismal winter, the Dean’s creativity serves as a burst of much needed sunshine. The film is a blockbuster, drawing rave reviews from age-old critics in the second-year class as well as from the less-jaded first-years.
The movie, though brief, is poignant and gripping. Our hero will clearly let nothing interfere with his space, and defend his territory at all cost. He even summons the dreaded front-loader to protect the area from unknown forces. Throughout the movie (which involves tremendous stunt driving by the Dean himself) Swieringa projects energy and an eerie sense of control.
The poise and stately manner with which he plays “The Dean” is remarkable. Sources cite his pre-cinematic experience: In those days he struggled to look alert and composed during rancorous battles over depreciation methods at Financial Accounting Standards Board meetings. As if that was not exciting enough, he is even reported to have endured some of the Purchase vs. Pooling discussions. Clearly these experiences have borne fruit and enable the Dean to remain unruffled as he navigates the tight entrance to his “space.” Again, a masterful performance topping his last big hit “Drive for Five” and all but erasing the dismal failure of the short lived “Whaaatzz Up?” released in May of 2000.
Clearly Dean Swieringa is a rising star in business-school films. Rumor has it that he may even team up with the famous “Kaplan” of Harvard to produce “Crouching Dean, Hidden Costs,” to be directed by the cinematic genius of Hal Bierman. Other future performances with Kaplan might include “Goodwill Accounting” where Kaplan spends time being counseled by Swieringa on the true methods of ABC. Of course, none of this has been finalized as yet. Regardless, Dean Swieringa deserves a hearty BRAVO!!! for “A Dean’s Space.” Thank you for a splash of humor in a sea of gray.
