Although we all spend a short time here at the Johnson School, our education and memories will last a lifetime. To honor and ensure the continued excellence of this school, graduating classes traditionally give a significant gift. Choosing and raising funds for the gift is a long process, which started months ago with the election of class officers and now has culminated with voting. The class of 2001 has spoken and we are giving two gifts. Two gifts? Yup. Two gifts.
Both ideas more than meet all of the criteria we set for the class gift and will make a major, positive impact on the life of the Johnson School. The criteria are simple. The gift must be feasible to execute, be significant, make an impact, be administrable by the school and strike a cord with the class. So the winners are…
1. Community Impact Fund
We will establish a Class of 2001 fund with the Community Impact Foundation (CIF) of Tompkins County, a local non-profit organization. A JGSM student board, probably with faculty support, will receive funding proposals from non-profit organizations in Ithaca, evaluate each proposal and then arrange for funding and student management assistance. Not only are we doing right by our community, but we will also enable a powerful, living case study experience helping non-profits develop and execute their business missions. This fund will join the Immersions, the Cayuga Fund, Big Red Ventures, and JSOutfitters as powerful, hands-on learning tools for MBA students, further differentiating JGSM in the marketplace and better preparing future students to become successful business leaders.
2.International Scholarship Fund
We are very pleased to report that our major gift will establish a Class of 2001 Scholarship. Our gift will kick off a joint fund-raising effort with the Development and Admissions Departments that will raise a substantial pool from which scholarships for non-U.S. students will be generated. International students are excluded from most financial aid sources that are available to Americans, making this our gift a critical tool for attracting the highest caliber students from around the world. Additionally, momentum from this international fundraising effort is expected to deepen the giving relationship between international alumni and JGSM, generating a higher giving rate overall.
Not only will the class of 2001 leave a legacy of leadership and accomplishment in the school, but we will also leave behind two terrific gifts that will make JGSM a better place for future classes. Our legacy will stretch from Ithaca to Istanbul, from Sage Hall to San Francisco. We look forward to the challenges of the future and can’t wait to see what the Classes of 2002 and 2003 come up with in the next couple of years.
* Editors Note: Congratulations second-years, we first-years will have a hard time living up to your standards of generosity and compassion.
