Welcome admitted students! Friday, April 20, marks the beginning of Destination Johnson 2001, this year’s introduction to the Johnson School for admitted students. “The weekend is a great opportunity for prospective students to see what a unique place the Johnson School really is and how much the Cornell community really has to offer,” said Tracy Sinclair ’02.

The Destination Johnson committee and the Johnson Admissions Group (JAG) have spent more than six months planning a full weekend of events for prospective students to get a good feel for what life is like here at business school. The program’s aim is to show not just the academic components of the school, but the extensive career support, social life, and distinct community environment as well.

The weekend officially kicks off on Friday with Dean Robert Swieringa’s welcome address followed by remarks by first-year student Tony Titus. Then, the welcome reception and Casino Night will be held in the Atrium, an exciting event for prospective students and their hosts.

Rise and shine early for an activity-packed day on Saturday. It will be hectic, but well worth it. The morning starts with a team dynamics activity for prospective students. Significant others and spouses will be treated to a program sponsored by the Johnson School’s couples association, Joint Ventures. A luncheon in the Atrium followed by a variety of sessions to acquaint you with career services, financial aid, and one-of-a-kind immersion learning programs will fill the afternoon. Additionally, an alumni panel will give a peek of life after JGSM from some of the recent grads.

After a long day, Saturday evening brings two great social events for prospective students to kickback, relax, and get to know more of the current students. First, current students will host dinners for small groups in their homes. Then, it’s off to the Ithaca Country Club for a party given by the Student Association, the social committee of the Johnson School. Have a drink, dance, or socialize, but don’t miss it!

Sunday’s highlights include a session on the MBA curriculum and closing remarks given by Dean John Elliott. There is also some free time to explore the Cornell campus, the city of Ithaca, and even housing options.

A big factor in my decision to come here last year was talking directly with students, so take every opportunity to introduce yourself to us. We are all here to make sure you have a good time: “I’m really looking forward to meeting the admitted students this year. Last year was a blast!” said Melanie Herald ’02.

On a personal note, my biggest impression from last year’s Destination Johnson was the level of student involvement in the weekend, showing how dedicated they were to their school. One year later, I have found that even truer. I hope you will take advantage of every moment of this weekend to find that out for yourselves. We are thrilled you are here. Have a great time!
