Do you need a good stress reliever, want to increase your energy level, build stamina, or simply shed a few (or more) pounds? Join the Run.Fast.Forward Johnson School Running Club! This past year has been the club’s first official year of existence. The club has been extremely successful due to the leadership efforts of club president Carol Chan and other dedicated first- and second-year students.

The club’s mission is to encourage running within the Johnson School community, spread interest among new runners and help foster a lifetime of enjoyment for the sport for runners at all levels. Group runs usually take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 pm. It starts off with a mile run around Beebe Lake and then runners split off into either a shorter run of 3-5 miles or a longer distance of 6-8 miles for our hard-core members. Runners at all levels are encouraged and welcomed to join. The club takes advantage of Cornell’s natural and scenic surroundings, encompassing woodlands, trails, rolling hills, streams, and gorges. Other club activities include post-run brunches, happy hours, and joint events/races with local running clubs.

The running club recently participated in the 20th Annual Skunk Cabbage Classic held on Sunday, April 1, 2001, to benefit the Special Olympics of New York. The race was co-sponsored by the Finger Lakes Running Club and the Cornell Athletic Club. Carol Chan was instrumental in arranging sponsorship for Johnson School participants from UBS Warburg who donated $20 for each student and $40 for every faculty or staff member. The two separate races held were the 10K (6.2 miles) and the half marathon (13.1 miles). Participants in the half marathon included: Jim Balet ’01, Trisha Jen ’01, Mike Husson ’01, Justin O’Keefe ’02. 10K runners included: Yilmaz Arisoy ’01, Jon Baker ’01, Carol Chan ’01, Brian Gregory ’02, Tao Jin ’02, Ladislav Lettovsky ’01 and his daughter, Steve Milt ’02, Eliza Moore ’02, Jennifer Pertoso ’02, Tom Schryver ’02, Anita Varghese ’02. Our faculty representative, Prof. Sanjeev, was also a 10K participant and enthusiastic supporter. Both courses were held around Cornell campus. Special thanks to organizers Carol Chan and Rich Fahey ’01!

The Skunk Cabbage Classic is just one of many ways that as a member of the running club you can not only get into tip-top shape, but also contribute to a worthwhile cause. For more information on the club and how to join, contact Justin O’Keeffe, jro9@cornell.edu.

Editor’s note: The Running Club also raised more than $1,000 for Special Olympics New York through contributions from UBS Warburg.
