At the end of Fall Break, sixty-three first-year Johnson students made the trek to New York City to participate in the annual "Day with a Trader / Day with a Banker" event. Organized by Dr. Alan Biloski, this popular program provides students with formal Wall Street training, an introduction to the daily activities of investment bankers and traders, and networking opportunities with some of the school's most loyal corporate recruiting teams. This event has been held for traders since 2002, but due to the increased interest shown by both banks and students, Dr. Biloski arranged for investment banking candidates to participate this year.

On Sunday evening, Johnson students were treated to a reception and dinner at the Yale Club, hosted by Citigroup. Recent alumni, Melissa Middleton and Drew Pascarella, presented a brief overview of valuation techniques at the end of the night. Early the next morning, students reported to Credit Suisse First Boston headquarters on Madison Avenue for a four-hour block of instruction from "Training the Street".

After class and a catered lunch at CSFB, investment banking students headed up to Bloomberg headquarters for some instruction on their system, while sales and trading students spread out to different banks for an afternoon of hands-on training at various trading floors. After Bloomberg, the investment banking students used the afternoon to conduct informational interviews at several Wall Street firms.

Students were excited about every aspect of the event. Hani Zabanah got the most out of Training the Street's class, stating, "It was a great overview of the industry and some of the key valuation considerations that firms are looking at when assessing a deal." Sam Kim got a lot out of his informational interview at Citigroup, where four alumni spent time with his group asking behavioral interview questions and sharing the recruiter's perspective with first year students. Another first year investment banking student, Alec Porteous, had a very positive experience at Deutsche Bank. "I went to Deutsche Bank with a small group of classmates. Each of us met with at least two bankers, and the sessions provided a good opportunity to ask questions about the bank and get feedback on our resumes and the recruiting process. The bankers themselves were very generous with their time, and it was a great learning experience," said Porteous.

The day ended with a CSFB reception at the popular Park Avenue sushi restaurant Sugarcain, followed by drinks overlooking the New York skyline from atop the Lehman Brothers headquarters building.

Day with a Trader / Banker will continue to grow at Johnson, as more students realize the value that this event adds to their internship search experience. This program is beneficial and exciting for the banks as well. Dr. Biloski stated "the banks have been highly complementary of our visit and have subsequently followed up to explore other ways they can get exposure to the Johnson School and our students."
